Summer is flying by and we’ve been busy as a bee!
Literally -we have gone from 1 bee yard with 3 hives to 3 yards and 14 hives! Our largest yard is located at the Just Food Farm in Blackburn Hamlet. The honey produced from these hives will be as local as you can get to Ottawa and we are now officially part of Savour Ottawa.
Speaking of Ron, he has been attending an advanced beekeeping mentorship program down in the Kawarthas and has taken on a few apprentices of his own at the Just Food Farm site. Ron will be offering official beekeeping courses starting in spring 2015 (more on that in an upcoming newsletter).
In other news, Corrie has been experimenting with new ferments, including pickles, Jun, ginger beer, and much more. Our gardens are doing spectacular and we are grateful for the consistent rain we have been getting. We are also working on a new logo and website (stay tuned!).

Fall 2014 Fermentation Workshops
Saurkraut, kimchi, sourdough bread, and kombucha!
Fermented foods can be mysterious and intimidating. We will provide you with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make your own healthy fermented foods and drinks. It will be informative, hands on, practical, and fun. Discover how simple the ancient art and science of fermentation actually is and how you can integrate fermented foods into your daily life.
Group size is small so you are guaranteed lots of personal attention. At the workshops, you will get a chance to try several homemade fermented foods and beverages.
Participants will leave with a jar of saurkraut, kimchi spice, a kombucha mother, sourdough starter, recipes, and instructions. We also offer online support after the workshop. These workshops sell out quickly so register today.
In partnership with Just Food, Ron St. Louis of Radical Homestead will host an introduction on bees, their behaviors, and a quick overview of what’s involved in beekeeping. Weather permitting, we will open up some beehives to have a personal look inside. Watch the bees go about their business, identify honey, pollen, eggs/larvae/brood/bees, and maybe even spot the queen and taste some fresh honey!
